A Learning Disability is a developmental or neurological condition affecting the way an individual receives, processes or expresses information. A Learning Disability needs to be addressed when it draws attention to itself or gets in the way of person reaching his full potential.
Below is a short checklist of characteristics of a person who has a Learning Disability. A person has difficulty with:
- Learning the alphabet or a ABC song
- Rhyming Words
- Recognizing letters or shapes
- Connecting letters to the sounds they make
- Copying letters, numbers or shapes
- Retelling stories in his own words, verbally or on paper
- Naming a variety of items in categories
- Paying attention when there is no visual stimulus or trying to stay focused on written material.
- Doing puzzles or logic and reasoning activities
- Pronouncing words correctly or struggling to learn new words
- Changing activities without getting upset
- Following directions or routines
- Completing tasks with minimal help from others
